“Single, double or triple?” was not an inquiry about the variety of heart bypass I required, but how I would like my Wendy’s pretzel bacon cheeseburger:

My appreciation of this meal should have been enhanced by my level of hunger upon finally reaching Los Angeles, but shockingly, the soggy bacon, deflavorized meat squares and cold bread were an avenue to dissatisfaction as I yearned for the illustrated item:

... rather than the reality ration.

I subdued my sorrows with a tub of their chili:

... which had onions and cheese to purge my palate of their twisted take on pattied pretzels.

We bypassed the ticket booth at Modern Man and descended into a mine shaft:

... from this garrison of gentleman’s grooming.

Booths are setup like train compartments along the sideline of this speakeasy:

... with video monitors standing in for windows.

We got on board with a solid Manhattan ($7.00) and a cinnamon-scented Weary Traveller ($8.00) with Maraschino and Fernet.

A caprese salad ($8.00):

... had tomatoes that were chillier than we prefer topped with slices of mozzarella and a balsamic and olive oil dressing followed up by a quesadilla ($6.00):

... with cojita, green onions, salsa and chili-charged sour cream.

Naan was adorned with melted mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, parmesan and arugula ($8.00):

... to round out the dormy dining car options.

This subterranean station was a tracktive place for a drink.

The “bridgetown” scramble ($9.75):

... at Bumblekiss:

... with house smoked salmon, asparagus, sun dried tomato pesto and onion was cooked firmer than our specified “soft”, but it was still serviceable beside a fruitcup and biscuit.

Chicken in a blanket” ($10.00):

... were cigars of chicken apple sausage in buttermilk pancakes. There was a lack of loft to the flat-jacks but the bacony cheddar scramble had bits of crispy pork to distract from the dense duvets.

The friendly staff was the true traction at this breakfast bungalow where there were lots of crayoning kids and neighborhood noshers.

We blew over to Greenleaf:

... for a “Greenleaf” ($5.95) and a “classic smoothie” ($5.95) which were bespoke bibes of organic origin.

The smoothie was a pleasant produce punch of banana-thickened, strawberried carrot and orange juice while their namesake nourishment had a pronounced lime, apple and parsley component with celery, spinach and kale giving way to a gingery heat. It was cooler than room temp, but not cold (which would have made it more refreshing.)

This squeezing station:

... seems to cater towards the cleansers but offers some simple extractions for the rest of the pulpulation.

The marion berry “crack coffee cake” ($3.75):

... was a mayoral muffin at the recently mortared Sugar Cube:

Pecan and oats streuseled this cinnamon stump while the strata ($6.50):

... wedged in with layers of cheesy, mushroom and cherry tomato savoriness.

This squared off sucrose shop was is a fine and friendly dessert dugout.

Our boiled and baked bread bases for breakfast at Kenny & Zuke’s Bagelworks:

... were doughnominations of dental delight loxed down with sheets of silken Nova with a layer of cream cheese to bind our bundles (we knew to steer clear of the jerkier gravlax from our previous visit.)

K&Z Bagelworks remains a bready backboard to which we will continue to loop back.

We hit the deck of Hawthorne Street Café:

... for a couple iced coffees and a hunk of their Marionberry coffee cake ($4.95):

We picked our way through this heated, streuseled dessert with a band of berry jam belting the belly of this grandmothery sweet before saying goodbye to the friendly staff at this converted bungalow breakroom.

Sheets of pasta rolled out from the kitchen at Ciao Vito:

... where garlicky shrimp ($9):

... with crunchy croutons and olive-oiled heirloom tomatoes ($5):

... were a swell start to our snacking.

Charred octopus ($8):

... tentacled with cherry tomatoes was a simple, ramped up ration along with a sumptuous sugo of pork pedestaled on polenta ($8):

None of the vittles were vetoes and we will have to return for some of those noodles soon.

A cat slunk around the bar at Leisure Public House:

... as we sipped on a whiskied Boulevard ($9.00) and a pepper-punched “hot derby" ($8.00) with a sweet heat.

Fruit winged out from goat, sheep and cow cheeses ($8.00):

... wedged in with red grapes and slivered almonds in a funny fromage dissection dish.

A “Reuben”($8.00):

... was a pressed pastrami, Swiss and sauerkraut slab that we chomped through along with a turkey ($8.00):

... imbreaded with Cheddar and pesto. These were leisurely lumps in a casual cat corridor that may not make it on the rotation, but was still a good rest stop.

Chorizo and eggs ($7.95):

... tucked into tortillas with a side of beans and rice and a breakfast burrito ($5.50):

... were hefty helpings we greedily wolfed down under the watchful gaze of the massive mural at La Bonita.

This tortilla-based breakfast held enough of a caloric component to carry us into next week on their student-friendly sustenance.
