They hadn’t yet rolled out the cocktail menu at Barrel & Ashes:

... so we asked if the unprinted paper included a couple of our go to glugs.

The bartender (Goldie Hawn v2.0) made us a Vieux Carre and a Sazerac ($13.00 each):

... without hesitation.

Both were fine formulations that we enjoyed with hush puppies ($4.00):

Maizing mounds with honey butter were cobby contentment dipped in honey butter. We continued the corn-tenuity with frito pie ($9.00):

This Southwest sack of chips, chili and Cheddar was capped with sour cream and green onions in a bandito beckoning bag.

“The Best Damn Chcik’n Sandwich Ya Ever Had” ($9.00):

... was pecked with pimento cheese, with slaw and jalapeños to roost with crisp crusted, moist fried chicken. We didn’t disagree with the designation.

We were accidentally given a lunch menu and were told that we couldn’t get the burger during dinner hours (so we will have to barrel back for a midday meal soon.)

We buzzed through a bibe ($14.00):

at Birch:

... with a burg of bee pollen pellets surrounded by honeyed Scotch, yuzu and chamomile.

We were up for this “#7” alongside the “#6” ($13.00):

... that was mezcal-ibrated with cynar, cinnamon with a boost of body from egg white.

These enchanting inebriators were filtered by liver ($13.00):

... with port jelly. This foie gras and chicken liver mousse was swell spread on rustic rafts followed by sweetbreads ($19.00):

These wonder glands were nudged with gnocchi in a cauliflower and preserved lemon in a terrific tumble of tufts.

Birch was a tree-t. We need to lumber back for more of their well rooted rations.

The home fries were just like we like them at The Commissary.

These nuggets sided our morning meal with their dark, crusty, moist-middled, ground grub goodness.

Ciabatta shod eggs and cheese ($5.75):

... which got a sock of aioli but was trumped by the “Burbank biscuit” ($6.50):

... with flaky flanks fortified with mustard, Cheddar and a fried egg - a bankable bur-eakfast served up with excellent coffee.

We will return to check out the avocado toast with egg that we saw at a nabe tabe soon.

Pig tail ($16.00):

... is worth a snout out at Cassia. We pulled the pork from this wag-worthy, gorgeously grilled, hind hoverer and wound it in leaves for hedonistic, herby, hoggy, helpings.

A bottle of 2014 L’Argentier Aramon Vielles Vignes Rosé ($35.00):

... received minimized markup and moistened hot oil-kissed, spicy scallops ($18.00):

... corn kernels, ham strips and dried shrimp.

Black cod ($26.00):

... bathed in a bowl of broth lilted with lychee relish and lightened with lettuce and herb was a center piece of worshipable cod.

Charcuterie fried rice ($16.00):

... beckoned with bacon alongside Chinese broccoli ($9.00):

... with caramelized fish sauce.

Cassia was on point with sensational food. We will have to em-bark on our return trip soon.

Sugared spirals at Churro Borough:

... chur-rounded scoops of spicy chocolate:

... and chocolate cookie malt ice cream ($4.50 each):

The thin churro discs had a craveable crispness against the fine, frigid, fillings that were worth the wait. We will burrow back for more of these sensational ice cream sandwiches with a twist.

Ever since our omelette at Petite Trois, we have had no luck in finding a fetal football that didn’t touchdown as tough in comparison.

Such was the case with Mess Hall’s:

... crack at a cheese and kalelection ($13.00):

Eggs and ham ($12.00):

... were also solid standard issue but we hear this place is really all about dinner….

Terrine changed their terrain as they forcedmeat on the grill for their fourth of July BBQ buffet.

Beautiful brisket, perky pork ribs and crisp-crusted, pickle-brined fried chicken were all juicy and delectable.

Other standouts included the spicy green beans, baked beans, and squash salad with purslane and feta.

The hot dog meat:

... didn’t hold together as much as we prefer and was a salty dog but the swordfish brochettes, grilled corn on the cobb and kraut were more our speed.

A couple drafts:

... blew away our thirst before we declared independence from our hunger.

We will have to explore their non-holiday menu sometime soon.

Cookies and cream and Madagascar chocolate ($4.75 for small):

... at Pazzo Gelato:

... were creamy, cookiey, chocolatey cups of coolant.

This ‘lato gelled with our churny yearnings and we will have to check out their baked goods next time we pazzo by.

One remaining muffin ($3.00):

... meant the carbo sports teams had been selected at Coffee Commissary.

All that was left was a misshapen, charmless, nerd cake that they call a “9-grain” (which probably doesn’t count my grain that this goes against since one of my least-preferred muffin flavors is wheat germ.) This local chain bakes their goods at one of their other germ-ination stations. It wasn’t the anticipated, dense, gut-scrubber; it was a soft and seedy stump - not something I would reorder, but perhaps that is why it was left on the bready bleachers.

The coffee ($3.00) was good though.

One order of king steam dumplings ($7.50):

... at Myung In Dumplings:

... delivered four bread-bound baseballs filled with ground pork and vegetables which we threw down with kimchee, daikon and shredded iceburg in the bowls of banchan.

Cold beer and our stuffed, steamed, stumps were fine fortification at this strip mall dumpling dugout.
