Machaca ($8.95):

... melded with eggs for breakfast at El Buen Gusto:

... where house made tortillas:

... were hot, thick masa mats that mingled with over easies in “plato #1” ($9.95):

Salvadorian sausage and fried plantains added meat and sweet to this sour cream and bean-sided dish up of desayuno.

There wasn’t a hipster in sight as the staff habla’ed to us in the default discussion format at this family-filled, gusto-teria.

I don’t think I have left more of a drink behind than I have with the Manhattan ($12.00) at The Roost.

This ice-forward fluid was as unbalanced as I would have felt if I had completed this cocktail. The Tom Collins ($7.00) was less of an issue at this peculiar perch that was sparsely populated at 9 on a Friday.

Wings ($8.99):

... and dumplings (6.99):

... were standard issue pub grub while a shrimp pad si ew ($12.99):

... offered additional belly ballast with thick noodles.

This won’t be a return for us, but they seem to have their share of regulars who know enough to stick to the PBR and shots.

We inhaled our Gibraltar and Americano:

... at Intelligentsia:

... while witnessing hipsters in their habitat at this Silverlake site of caffeine and carbs.

The banana and carrot muffins ($3.75 each):

... looked and tasted like Sugarbloom Bakery goods.

Orange threads ran through the moist, cream cheese-crowned, rooty round while phloem bundles delivered darkened stripes to the fruity formation.

This chain delivered reliably relishable rations to fuel us for fromage shopping at the excellent cheese shop:

... next door.

We succumbed to the signage:

... and ordered a grilled cheese ($9.00):

... at Demitasse.

Cheddar and Asian pear paired for a perky, mustardy, melty sandwich that may not have been life-changing, but it was very good sided with pleasing pickles.

101 dry cider was nice but they forgot to shake it before opening so the flavor was inconsistent (but still good, getting sweeter on the second glass) while the Angel City pilsner:

... was a cooling brew to wash down a barley salad ($10.00):

... with bright roots.

We liked this beet and radishy grain food bowl but the vegan chocolate chip cookie:

... was less our thing (due to the buttery bias that our palate possesses.)

We have to return for a cup of their roasty wares and more chow soon.

We stood at the Republique in a long line of punters pledging allegiance to the pastry case:

... before placing our order for the burger ($15.00) and Croque Madame ($13.00).

Customers who ordered well after us completed their meals giving us the suspicion that our sustenance was lost in the shuffle. We checked in with a server and they expedited our sandwiches.

Caramelized onions sweetened the dry aged beef on our medium rare burger.

A poppy seeded bun corralled this meaty marvel served with fries:

... that were a little greasy but okay.

Heavenly ham was highlighted in the Croque Madame:

... which reminded us of Campanile’s (the previous occupant of this historic building) grilled cheese nights on Thursdays.

We will continue to converge on this indivisibly impressive, ‘casionally chaotic chow center when we are at liberty.

A dry cleaner style
moving rack suspended spirits over the bar at Sassafras.

We drank in the decor along with a Vieux Carre and Lousianne.

Both whiskied whetters were bitten with Benedictine and bitters.

The cherried chug of vermouth sweetened Lousianne and the squared off, old favorite were fine fluid ‘freshment at this Hollywood haunt.

The “petite pie” ($3.75):

... at Winsome:

... did not lose some likability with us.

We enjoyed this abbreviated black berry and Meyer lemon pouch of flaky folds and enough acidic effort to enhance this fine, fruit folio as we waited for our seats at this hipster-teria.

The baked egg scramble ($14.00):

... with mushrooms, avocado and Cheddar was fine but we probably wouldn’t have ordered the sautéed greens ($7.00):

... if we knew they were the same veg from the scram under breadcrumbs.

Crisp edges laced the buckwheat and semolina pancake ($11.00):

... which was a relishable, risen, un-flipped flapjack. Chestnut honey gilded this jam-jostled circle of sensation.

We will have to return for another of winsome wheaten wares soon.

We injected ourself with a penicillin ($12.00) at The Black Cat:

... where the 10 o’clock strays were ‘wallering roudily as we sunk into our cozy booth in the back. The dose of Scotch and ginger lulled us along with a Vieux Carre ($12.00):

... that we sipped with a “cat snack” ($8.00):

... which was a meow mix up of candied nuts, pickles and Castelvetrano olives.

The fried Brussels ($9.00):

... were on the oily side but still clawable cabbagey balls while the cheese burger ($15.00):

... was a frisky buffet of blue cheese on a nice, medium rare beef bundle. The fries were a little softer than we prefer, but still good.

The Black Cat was a purfectly pleasant place to wet our whiskers and while we may not pounce back, we might curl up at this kitty corner if we happen to be strutting by.

A pupusa made with rice flour ($2.50) at El Buen Gusto:

...was a new one on us.

The texture was reminiscent of mochi in this cheerfully chewy chomp of cheese accompanied by the more traditional corn-tainers ($2.25):

... of the ‘companying frisbee fortification filled with zucchini, chicharrones and cheese.

Cold beer coerced our ear-y eating followed by sweet cylinders of empanadas with beans.

We will return to this cheap and cheerful Salvadorian ‘stablishment to check out more of the menu soon.

Ho Ho’s and Ding Dongs rang our bell at Cake Monkey:

... where the “El Rollo" ($3.75):

... included a peanut butter swirl in their nursery noshtalgia along with a “black and white cakewich” ($3.75):

... that we savored along with a “‘Nuff said” ($3.00).

This rich chocolate cookie with Cocoa Krispies, pecans and marshmallow got a hit of salt to fleur de sel us on this luscious lump.

The cakes are delish, but their other monkey business is evolutionary.
